Daily Power-up: 1 Samuel 1:15, 1 Samuel 1:27-28a
1 Samuel 1:15:
But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord.”
1 Samuel 1:27-28a:
For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he Lives, he is lent to the Lord.
Personal Reflection: Hannah
The difficult thing about the story of Hannah is that she gives up her son for someone else to raise when he was likely only 3-5 years old. Does that seem crazy to any other parents out there?! Not only that, but she leaves him in the charge of Eli, who apparently had done a terrible job in raising his own two sons (they are described as “worthless, evil men” who “did not know the Lord”). Maybe I don’t have as much faith as I should, or maybe it is crazy, but as a reward to Hannah for her faithfulness, God protected Samuel and raised him as His own. What is apparent to me is that God rewards the faith of a praying mother.
“During the first three years of the life of Samuel the prophet, his mother carefully taught him to distinguish between good and evil. By every familiar object surrounding him she sought to lead his thoughts up to the Creator. In fulfillment of her vow to give her son to the Lord, with great self-denial she placed him under the care of Eli the high priest, to be trained for service in the house of God… His early training led him to choose to maintain his Christian integrity. What a reward was Hannah’s! And what an encouragement to faithfulness is her example!” (EW CG pg. 197.1) I don’t know about you, but when I initially read this statement, instead of feeling inspired and encouraged I felt discouraged by comparison. I think of what a day in the life of Hannah and Samuel must have looked like during those years. She was earnest to teach him, even more so than most, because she knew her time with him was short. I wish I was so earnest to make the most of the early years I have with both my boys at home. When I think about a day in the life of mothering my boys, I am burdened by the thought of all my shortcomings - how I have felt impatient, or distracted, worn down by the daily struggle. Not exactly the picture of faithfulness and self-denial.
Thankfully, there is grace. Grace for a tired and discouraged mother like myself. God sees me, He hears me, and He values the work I am doing, mistakes and all. He calls me to come to Him and He will give me the rest I need and He can make up for where I lack. “No work can equal that of the Christian mother. She takes up her work with a sense of what it is to bring up her children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. How often will she feel her burden's weight heavier than she can bear; and then how precious the privilege of taking it all to her sympathizing Savior in prayer! She may lay her burden at His feet and find in His presence a strength that will sustain her and give her cheerfulness, hope, courage, and wisdom in the most trying hours. How sweet to the careworn mother is the consciousness of such a friend in all her difficulties! If mothers would go to Christ more frequently and trust Him more fully, their burdens would be easier, and they would find rest to their souls.” (AH 204.3)
One thing is clear, Hannah knew how to pour her heart out to God. She started her journey as a mother in prayer, and continued to pray faithfully for Samuel long after he was no longer under her care. It must have been so hard for her to be without Samuel, but instead of worrying about him she took her cares to Jesus where she found rest for her soul. I’m thankful that I don’t have to give my sons away, but I do want to faithfully teach them and pray for them as if the time is short. I want my failures to drive me to my knees so that instead of feeling guilt and shame I can find rest in my friend Jesus.

The Ammonites and Syrians Defeated
1 It happened after this that the king of the people of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. 2 Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.”
So David sent by the hand of his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the people of Ammon. 3 And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Has David not rather sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”
4 Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off half of their beards, cut off their garments in the middle, at their buttocks, and sent them away. 5 When they told David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”
6 When the people of Ammon saw that they had made themselves repulsive to David, the people of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand foot soldiers; and from the king of Maacah one thousand men, and from Ish-Tob twelve thousand men. 7 Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. 8 Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array at the entrance of the gate. And the Syrians of Zoba, Beth Rehob, Ish-Tob, and Maacah were by themselves in the field.
9 When Joab saw that the battle line was against him before and behind, he chose some of Israel’s best and put them in battle array against the Syrians. 10 And the rest of the people he put under the command of Abishai his brother, that he might set them in battle array against the people of Ammon. 11 Then he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. 12 Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”
13 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. 14 When the people of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fleeing, they also fled before Abishai, and entered the city. So Joab returned from the people of Ammon and went to Jerusalem.
15 When the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered together. 16 Then Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River, and they came to Helam. And Shobach the commander of Hadadezer’s army went before them. 17 When it was told David, he gathered all Israel, crossed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in battle array against David and fought with him. 18 Then the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand horsemen of the Syrians, and struck Shobach the commander of their army, who died there. 19 And when all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the people of Ammon anymore.

Also the people of Ammon gathered together from their cities, and came to battle.
8 Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. 9 Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array before the gate of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.

So the Syrians were not willing to help the people of Ammon anymore.

The Assurance of God’s Saving Work

May the name of the God of Jacob defend you;
